MARY THE PERPETUAL VIRGIN? by steve finnell

The Roman Catholic tradition is that the Virgin Mary remained a virgin her entire life. What does the Bible teach?

Mary was not a perpetual virgin.

Matthew 1:24-25 And Joseph awoke from sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and called His name Jesus. (NASB)

Matthew 1:25 And he knew her not till she brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus. (Douay-Rheims Bible) Note: This Bible is a Catholic translation.

Matthew 1:25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. (NIV)

Mary had other children.

Mark 6:1-3 Jesus went out from there.......3 Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us"? And they took offense at Him.(NASB)

Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? are not also his sisters here with us? And they were scandalized in regard to him. (Douay-Rheims Bible) Note: This Bible is a Catholic translation.

Mark 6:3 Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended in him.(ERV)

References to the siblings of Jesus: Matthew 13:55,56 Matthew 12:46 Luke 8:19 Mark 3:31.

The virgin Mary was not a perpetual virgin!

Church tradition that is contrary to the Bible is not God's tradition.
